Meet the Tutor: Darrien Ross

From NDA Student to Interior Design Tutor: Meet Darrien

Having studied with the National Design Academy herself, Darrien Ross knows what it’s like to take those first steps into interior design. Now one of our newest tutors, she’s helping students build their skills and confidence on our Fast-Track and In-Studio Diploma courses.

Watch the video to get to know Darrien, or read on to discover her journey from student to tutor, her design influences and the project she’d love to take on.

An early interest in interiors

Born in South Africa and raised in Mauritius, Darrien developed an interest in interior design while watching her parents buy and renovate houses. At home, she was often rearranging her bedroom, exploring how different layouts could change the look and feel of a space.

That curiosity eventually led her to the NDA, where she completed the Professional Interior Design Diploma before progressing to the BA (Hons) Interior Design degree.

Bringing her experience into the classroom

Teaching wasn’t originally part of Darrien’s career plan, but her experience teaching archery had already shown her how much she enjoyed helping others learn. Combining that with her interest in interiors made becoming an interior design tutor a natural next step.

As a former NDA student, Darrien understands the questions and uncertainties that can come with learning something new. She draws on that experience to support her students, helping them work through challenges and develop confidence in their own design decisions.

Design influences and a dream project

Darrien is particularly drawn to Rococo and Baroque design, with their rich detail and decorative features. Her own home takes a more relaxed approach, although there’s still room for a little maximalism.

Her dream project is ambitious: designing the entire interior of a cruise liner. With so many different spaces to consider, it would offer plenty of opportunities to explore her creativity.

What is UK Government Funding?

UK students pay approximately 50% of the full course fee – the balance is funded by the UK Government’s Adult education budget (AEB).

The National Design Academy is the only design school to be able to offer this funding as our Diplomas are all fully accredited by AIM Qualifications.
