7 Rental-Friendly Decor Hacks that will change your home
With owning a home still feeling out of reach for many people, creating a space that truly feels like yours in a rental has become more important than ever.
The good news is that you’re not alone in this. Many people have been in your shoes, and through trial and error (and many lost deposits), have discovered creative ways to make their space feel like their home whilst keeping the landlords happy.
Wanting to decorate a rental but don’t know where to start? Here’s 7 stress free tips to change your rented home.
Tried-and-Tested Rental Hacks
We know white walls can feel a little uninspiring when your personality screams colour, but before you go for the paint, consider these low-commitment ways to liven up your space.
Peel & Stick Feature Walls
Removable wallpapers and wall panels can transform a plain room into a statement space with minimal effort as most products can be applied without professional help and removed cleanly when it’s time to move out.
Did we mention they’re simple to install AND budget-friendly as well? Peel-and-stick wallpaper is definitely up there as one of the best renter tips.
Fabric Wallpaper
Fabric Wallpapers are a great opton for renters looking to create a high-end feature wall without the commitment of traditional wallpaper, the liquid starch method is a clever and budget-friendly solution. This DIY technique involves using liquid starch to temporarily adhere lightweight fabric to walls, creating the look of bespoke wallpaper without damaging the surface underneath.
Not only is it reusable, but when it’s time to move out, the fabric can be peeled away and the starch washed off with warm water.
It’s a little more tricky than the peel-and-stick method but it’s still a great way to add texture and visual interest without the permanent investment!
Stick on Tiles
Stick on tiles, also known as self-adhesive tiles, are a simple yet transformative solution for renters looking to update kitchens, bathrooms or utility spaces without needing to get messy with tile adhesive.
These self-adhesive tiles can be applied directly over existing smooth surfaces, creating a whole new look.
Great for updating tired splashbacks or just adding a bit of personality, most options are easy to install with minimal tools and can be removed when moving out, making them a practical alternative to traditional tiling.
Velcro Strips
Velcro strips are a renter’s best friend when it comes to decorating without leaving marks or holes behind.
These versatile adhesive fasteners make it easy to hang lightweight artwork, mirrors, wall hangings and even small shelves without the need for a drill. Great for when you want to add personalisation without dedicating to the entire wall.
But that’s not all, they can also be used to secure fabric panels, hide unsightly cables or attach decorative elements that can be removed and repositioned as your style evolves.
They’re simple, but they’re effective.
Plug-in Sconces
Plug-in wall sconces are a stylish and practical way for renters to add ambient lighting without the need for hardwiring or electrical work.
Designed to simply plug into a standard socket, they offer the sophisticated look of traditional wall lights while remaining completely removable.
If you’re not a fan of the cords (understandably) you can opt into concealing them with adhesive cable covers or decorative trunking for a cleaner finish, achieving a bespoke look without making permanent alterations to the property.
Easy to install and just as easy to take with you when you move!
Foam Moulding Strips
Foam moulding strips are a perfect way to add architectural character to plain walls without the cost or permanence of traditional wood panelling.
Typically made from lightweight, flexible materials with self-adhesive backing, these strips can be used to create decorative wall moulding, picture-frame panelling or classic Georgian-inspired designs in just a few hours.
Once painted to match the wall colour, foam moulding can create the illusion of bespoke joinery and elevate a space on a modest budget. Although this is our personal favourite tip, we have to be honest and say it does have the draw back of leaving (minimal) damage, but nothing a bit of paint won’t fix!
Layer Rugs
Layering rugs is an easy, commitment-free, way for renters to add texture, warmth and personality to their home. For the interior designers out there, you’ll know that layering is everything.
By placing a smaller statement rug over a larger neutral one, you can create visual interest, define different areas within a room and introduce colour or pattern without making any permanent changes.
Other than being a great design choice, layering rugs help to disguise imperfections while making a space feel more curated and inviting. Customisable, casual and stylish, what’s not to love?
Whether you’re settling into your first rental or looking to refresh your current space, these simple hacks can help you make the most of every room.
