From subtle touches to full-on Halloween transformations, it’s easy to craft a spine-tingling setting without spending a fortune this October.

Set the Mood with Spooky Lighting

Lighting is key to creating atmosphere for any season, but especially Halloween. Classically, candles would be placed in curved pumpkins, but with the invention of string lighting, and LED technology, you have the versatility to creating an impactful display, even on a low budget. Fairy lights can be placed in vases, bowls and sills, alongside mini pumpkins, plastic spiders and seasonal foliage.

PRO TIP: A warm, low light will create a spookier atmosphere than a cool, bright light.

Materials and Textures

Natural textures work well at this time of the year and help create a rugged feeling. Teaming these up with untreated cloth, lace and cobweb décor can invoke to sense of a haunted house, with an element of decay and disrepair.

Pattern is also a great way of adding fun to your Halloween displays this year. This might be as simple as a Beetlejuice style stripe, lacey spider web stitching or fabrics printed with spooky motifs.

PRO TIP: Layer manmade fabrics with natural elements, and objects of interest to create a display with depth.

Go Beyond Black and Orange

Dare to decorate differently! Traditionally blacks and orange are often used at Halloween, however this year how about taking your inspiration from Dia de los Muertos, the Mexican Day of the Dead festival. Floral offerings, skeleton themed masks, decorated with bright colours, and elaborate outfits are worn to celebrate those we have lost.

PRO TIP: Try painting your pumpkins instead of carving them this year, adding your own sugar skull design, or spooky face.

Pay Attention to the Details

In all design projects, attention to detail is key. When it comes to Halloween planning it can make the difference between a good decoration and a great decoration. If you are having a party, you have probably considered the centre piece, but what are you serving the food in? What will the guests be eating from and do you have the appropriate napkins.

PRO TIP:  If you are designing on a budget white crockery is versatile, you can dress this up with themed napkins, napkin rings and cutlery holders. Similarly simple glass bowls and vases can be used as part of your table décor, filed with candles and appropriately themed seasonal objects.

PRO TIP:  To further demonstrate your attention to deal, think about every surface, including fireplaces, windows, shelving and furniture. If you have a theme, think about how elements can be added to each of these to tie the theme throughout the room.

Motifs

Pumpkins, bats, vampires, cauldrons, broomsticks, ghosts and ravens; there are plenty of themes to choose from when designing your Halloween scheme. You may be drawn to one more than others, or you may want to incorporate all within your home.  If you want to create a maximalist scheme, the more the merrier, however if your style is more minimalist, perhaps select one or two, or combine a range of motifs in a monochromatic colour scheme.

PRO TIP: If you have plenty of window space, try having a theme per window, tailoring each interior sill to a different sill. If your sill is lower than your window, you can make a simple wooden riser with any off cuts of wood you can find. Paint this or cover it with spooky fabric to create a base for your objects.

Where Can You Create Spooky Statement Pieces at Home?

The Table

An obvious choice, and we have already mentioned centre pieces, cutlery and crockery. But there are some rules you can work to when creating the prefer table display.

  • Play with heights; you do not want anything which will stop your guest being able to interact but have different heights of objects adds visual interest. You can use anything as risers for objects, for example a traditional cake stands, an upturned bowl or even make something yourself with materials you may have from previous projects.
  • Layering of textures and materials will add depth. You may want to use a table runner or cloth, as well as place mats and napkins. Foliage and flowers can be added, alongside natural elements such as pumpkins, and objects like Halloween themed figures, candles and accessories. And don’t forget lighting.
  • Pick a colour scheme! Much like any design scheme, you need a clear colour direction. Remember the basic principles of colour theme, selecting a complimentary, harmonious or monochromatic scheme, and use this when selecting all your decorative elements.

The Front Door

Set the expectations from the start and use your front door and entrance hall to wow (or scare!) all your visits upon arrival.  Carved pumpkins are a tradition but utilise all the space you have. Porches are great for hanging things from, and steps add a variety of heights when placing your decorations.

PRO TIPS

  • Utilise any existing bushes or trees, using these to house lighting, skeleton bones or even top with a witch’s hat!
  • A door mat is a great way to change your entrance depending on the season, and you’ll use these each year so this is a sustainable way to decorate.

The Mantlepiece

The hearth is the heart of the home, and if you still have a traditional fireplace, decorating the mantlepiece is one of the easiest ways to create a spooky atmosphere. Much like the table, you want to create depth with layers, heights and materials, considering your theme and colour palette.

PRO TIP: Don’t have a mantlepiece? No need to miss out, a console table works just as well.

How Can You Create a Spooky Atmosphere this Halloween?

Candles

Candles create the perfect spooky environment; the low light and flickering flame is perfect for sharing ghost stories and scaring each other. A candelabra placed on a table will instantly elevate the spookiness, and you can even get bleeding candles to complete the look.

Cushions

Changing your cushions depending on the season is a great way of keeping your interiors fresh. Like your door mat, these can be reused each year. If you find some fabric you like, why not go one better and learn to make your own cushions, allowing you to accessories your soft furnishings exactly as you like.

Pumpkin Stacks

This is a quick and easy way to decorate; whether you get your pumpkins from the local grocer, supermarket, or pick your own at a farm, you can buy a variety of different shapes and sizes, stacking these up anyway you like. Mixing stacks of pumpkins with carves and painted ones can be an impactful way of celebrating October. And you’ll have plenty leftover for making soups, pies and stews once the celebrations are over.

Halloween Floral Displays

Floral displays can come in the form of a traditional bouquet or in a quirkier fashion, like these pumpkin planters, filled with succulents. Bringing the outside in is proven to boost our mood, but it also helps us celebrate the chance of seasons, and adds to that diversity of colours, patterns and textures which add depth to any scheme.

Wreaths

Wreaths are no longer just for Christmas, with seasonal wreaths gaining popularity in recent years. You can make your own, add to an existing one or buy new. If making your own, adding themed objects, like toy bats or spiders, increases the spookiness and gives you something unique to you.
