How AI Is Changing the Way We Imagine Spaces

AI is the latest technology to impact the interior design industry, and it is set to revolutionise the way designers work.

In our new short course, AI for Interior Design, our tutors unpack how AI technology in interior design can be harnessed alongside core skills such as hand sketching and 3D modelling to increase creativity and productivity within the concept stages of an interior design project.

Designing with Intelligence How AI Is Changing the Way We Imagine Spaces

Imagine for a moment having an innovative idea and then being able to use an AI tool to articulate that idea in a variety of formats to develop it further and add significantly to the creative aspects of your concept. Ideas can be expanded upon, developed and further refined by harnessing AI technology within your design workflow to reimagine spaces in new and exciting ways.

The ability to sketch has always been a designer’s first language, and it remains one of the most creative ways to brainstorm ideas and translate thoughts into a visual language. Implementing AI can enhance this process by taking initial sketches and refining them further by generating interpretations of your sketch to allow them to evolve beyond your preconceived ideas.

At the National Design Academy, we have been watching this shift unfold Seeing how AI adds to the creative process: the spark of an idea, the mood, the what if? That curiosity inspired our new six-week short course, AI for Interior Design – a space to explore how these tools can amplify, not automate, creativity.

Your New Studio Assistant

There is something thrilling about the first moments of a design concept coming into fruition – the essence of an idea before it hardens into a finished scheme. Traditionally this involved collating reference materials, collage and hand sketching. Now, AI design tools offer an additional tool that can work harmoniously with these trusted techniques to enhance the process and supercharge the creativity that can be achieved in these early stages.

Used correctly, AI becomes a creative partner that can elaborate and generate multiple creative options around your original ideas. It challenges you to refine your brief, question your instincts, and articulate your design thinking more clearly. In that sense, AI doesn’t diminish creativity, it demands more of it.

Learning to Speak a New Design Language

That’s what this short course is really about: learning to speak fluently in this new visual language. No coding. No jargon. Just the ability to direct and interpret visual output with precision and imagination.

Through a mix of live sessions and guided experimentation, students learn to use Ai platforms like Prome AI to generate, refine, and iterate interior concepts. They explore how prompts, tone, and composition shape results plus how to keep human authorship at the heart of the process.

“The beauty of implementing AI,” says Martin Course Leader for AI for Interior Design,“is that it mirrors how we think as designers – associative, layered, and visual. Contrary to popular belief AI is not about automation and more about creative collaboration.

Design in the Age of Acceleration

For today’s designers, AI in design isn’t a trend. It’s a tectonic shift.
Studios are already using AI for interior concept development, generating alternatives and presenting ideas to clients faster than ever with more creativity and efficiency within their working methods.

At NDA, we believe the next generation of designers will be defined not by how they resist technology, but by how thoughtfully they collaborate with it. That’s why this short course isn’t just technical training, its creative exploration, guided by practising designers who understand the nuances of craft and creative expression through collaboration with technology to build further on core skills,

A Course for the Curious

The AI for Interior Design short course runs entirely online over six weeks. There are no exams, just projects, discussion, and discovery. You’ll finish with an AIM-endorsed certificate and a portfolio of AI-assisted visuals that reflect your own design sensibility.

But more than that, you’ll finish with perspective – an understanding of what it means to be a designer in a time when imagination is shared between human and machine.

You leave seeing process differently and less about control, more about direction.
Because design has always evolved with its tools. This is simply the next one, and it’s teaching us that can be enhanced through the creative integration of technology.

What is UK Government Funding?

UK students pay approximately 50% of the full course fee – the balance is funded by the UK Government’s Adult education budget (AEB).

The National Design Academy is the only design school to be able to offer this funding as our Diplomas are all fully accredited by AIM Qualifications.
