The Future of Interior Design Isn't AI. It's Designers Who Know How to Use It

For over forty years I’ve worked as an interior designer.
I’ve watched our profession evolve from drawing boards and ink pens, through CAD, 3D modelling and photorealistic rendering. Every technological leap was met with the same prediction:
“This will replace designers.”
It never happened.
Instead, each new tool expanded what designers were capable of creating.
Today, Artificial Intelligence represents the biggest technological shift I’ve witnessed during my career.
Unlike previous software, AI isn’t simply drawing lines or producing renders.
It has become another creative tool within the designer’s workflow.
The question is no longer whether designers should use AI.
The real question is whether they understand how to use it creatively.
AI Doesn't Replace Creativity
One of the biggest myths surrounding AI is that it designs interiors – It doesn’t.
Just as a pencil on its own has never designed a beautiful room, neither has AI. Both are simply tools.
The creativity, judgement and experience still come from the designer
The difference is that AI allows us to explore ideas faster and more creatively.
A Typical Design Process... Then and Now
Twenty years ago developing a room concept for a client could easily take several days.
Today, AI allows designers to test dozens of possibilities within the day.
Not because AI is making the decisions…………but because it removes much of the
repetitive production work, allowing designers to spend more time doing what they do best – Designing and creating concepts.
AI assistance helps them to visualise and develop these ideas within their workflow.

One of the biggest surprises for people seeing AI used professionally is that many assume these images were simply “typed into a computer.”
The reality couldn’t be further from the truth.
Every image begins with a design brief.
Materials are specified.
Lighting is designed.
Styling is considered and developed
Colours, proportions and atmosphere are refined through multiple iterations.
The designer remains firmly in control throughout the process.
AI simply becomes another member of the design team.
The Future Designer
The future doesn’t belong to designers who ignore AI.
Neither does it belong to people who rely entirely upon it.
It belongs to designers who combine creativity, technical knowledge, critical thinking and AI into one professional workflow.
That combination is extraordinarily powerful.
Why I Developed the AI 4 Interior Design Course
After months of experimenting with AI within my own design practice and teaching, I realised something important.
There are plenty of videos explaining basic mechanical principles but there are very few courses showing designers how to think while using AI.
That’s why I developed AI 4 Interior Design.
The course teaches a professional workflow—how AI can support concept development, mood boards, sketch rendering, visualisation and client presentations while ensuring the designer remains at the heart of every decision.
