If you're starting a Higher Education course after 1 September 2012 and you live in England, you will be able to apply for a Student Loan to cover your course fees - subject to eligibility. The benefits of this are;
- More students will be able to study
- There are NO upfront fees payable
- You don't start to repay the loan until the April 4 years after you start your course or the April after you leave your course, whichever comes first
- You only start to make repayments once you are earning over £21,000 per year
- Loans are written off after 30 years
What Loans are available in 2012/13?
New part-time students who are studying on one of our Degree courses will have access to a tuition fee loan.
Loans will not be means tested and you will not start to pay back the loan until after the fourth anniversary of the start date of your course and you are earning more than £21,000.
Paying back your loan
Full-time and part-time students who start their course after 1 September 2012 begin paying back their student loan once they earn more than £21,000 per year. (This is currently subject to parliamentary approval).
More information on paying back your student loan is available on the Directgov web pages or see the video by Martin Lewis of Money Saving Expert outlining his guide to the new student finance system from 2012.
If you live in Wales or Northern Ireland;
Students from Wales and Northern Ireland are still eligible for grants to help towards the cost of course fees, as the loans system has not yet been implemented in these areas. For further information regarding eligibility and amounts available to you, please see the links below;
